Short answer: no trial tests lip masks on dark lips
We searched for trials of lip masks and other lip products that measured lip darkness, and we found none. The closest study is a 28-day randomized trial of a herbal lip product for dryness. Dark lips came up as a complaint in that trial, but pigmentation was never a measured outcome, so it cannot tell you whether a mask lightens anything.
The closest trial measured chapping, not color
The most relevant study is a randomized, double-blind trial of 66 Thai adults who applied a polyherbal lip hydrant or petroleum gel once daily for 28 days herbal lip hydrant trial. Both products reduced lip roughness, and the herbal product cut chapping significantly more.
The authors found no between-group difference in texture, wrinkles or hemoglobin. Dark lips were a reported complaint in 26 participants, but pigmentation was not a primary or measured endpoint. The trial's introduction links hyperpigmentation to oxidative stress and inflammation, yet the study did not test that pathway, so the mechanism for lip masks remains unestablished.
Sun is the best-supported lever against upper-lip darkening
Upper-lip darkening after sun exposure is called melasma mustache. Cleveland Clinic lists whitening agents, chemical peels, lasers and light therapy as treatment options, and notes that tranexamic acid is an off-label choice Cleveland Clinic on melasma mustache. It also warns that some treatments can cause rebound hyperpigmentation.
For prevention, the AAD recommends a non-irritating lip balm with SPF 30 or higher before going outdoors, even in winter AAD guidance on chapped lips. That is the step with the clearest link to the problem, though we found no trial showing it reverses existing darkening.
Lightening ingredients are tested on faces, not lips
Niacinamide and arbutin appear in many lightening products, but the data behind them come from facial skin. A narrative review reports 4% niacinamide was better tolerated than 4% hydroquinone, with almost comparable lightening, and that 3% niacinamide with 4-hexylresorcinol 0.4% outperformed niacinamide alone hyperpigmentation review. Neither study tested lips.
A melasma treatment update reports arbutin cream lowered MASI scores in trials, though some users developed erythema and itching melasma treatment update.
One cosmetic serum trial reported a 47.94% reduction in under-eye hyperpigmentation over six weeks under-eye serum trial. That product was a multi-ingredient formula tested on the periorbital area, so the number says nothing about lips.
Lasers are the only lip-specific lightening data, and they are clinical
The strongest lip-specific evidence comes from clinician-delivered lasers. An Er,Cr:YSGG 2780 nm series of 85 patients reported complete improvement in 74.1%, with mild adverse effects in 82.4% lip laser series.
What to look for in a lip product while you wait
A lip mask is a reasonable choice for dryness if it is gentle. Per the AAD, avoid camphor, menthol, flavoring, fragrance, lanolin and salicylic acid while lips are chapped, and look for ceramides, petrolatum, dimethicone, or zinc or titanium oxide instead.

Frequently asked questions
Will a lip mask fix dark lips?
Not on the evidence we found. Lip masks can address dryness and chapping, but no trial we found measured pigment changes from a lip mask. For lasting darkening, a dermatologist can discuss options and their risks.
Does SPF lip balm help prevent lip darkening?
The AAD recommends a lip balm with SPF 30 or higher before going outdoors, which addresses sun exposure linked to upper-lip darkening. We found no trial showing a lip balm reverses existing darkening, so treat it as a protective habit rather than a fix.
Are tranexamic acid or niacinamide safe on lips?
We found no safety data on long-term use of these lightening agents on lip skin. Tranexamic acid is an off-label option for melasma mustache, and niacinamide evidence comes from facial skin. Ask a clinician before applying either to your lips.
