Sleep hygiene

Sleep hygiene sounds like a shower routine for your pillow, but it just means the daily habits and bedroom conditions that make decent sleep more likely. Some of it is solid, some is overhyped, and none of it replaces treatment if you have real insomnia. Here is what the term means, what the evidence supports, and how to build a routine you will actually keep.

Sleep hygiene FAQ

What is sleep hygiene?

Sleep hygiene is a set of daily habits and bedroom conditions meant to make good sleep more likely: a steady schedule, a dark and cool room, limiting late caffeine and alcohol, and a wind-down period. It has nothing to do with cleanliness. Think of it as setting the stage for sleep, not forcing it.

Does sleep hygiene actually work?

For general sleep health, the habits are sensible and low risk. For diagnosed insomnia, the evidence for sleep hygiene on its own is weak, and clinical guidelines point to CBT-I as the first-line treatment. It is a reasonable foundation, but if you have struggled for weeks, it probably will not be enough alone.

Is sleep hygiene the same as CBT-I?

No. Sleep hygiene is education about habits and environment. CBT-I is a structured program that typically includes techniques like stimulus control, sleep restriction, and work on sleep-related worry. CBT-I programs often include hygiene advice, but the behavioral techniques are what do most of the heavy lifting.

Can poor sleep hygiene cause insomnia?

Poor habits can make sleep worse and help keep a sleep problem going, but they are rarely the whole story. Stress, medical conditions, medications, mental health, and other sleep disorders all play a role. If tidying up your habits does not help, ask a clinician instead of piling on more rules.

When should I see a doctor about my sleep?

If poor sleep happens several nights a week, lasts a few weeks or longer, and affects your days, get it checked. The same goes for loud snoring, gasping at night, or severe daytime sleepiness. Those can point to problems that no amount of bedroom tweaking will fix.
